Pope Francis cancels second day of engagements after being taken ill as coronavirus sweeps Italy

There are fears among some that Pope Francis may have contracted the coronavirus as it has been reported that he has canceled events for the second day in a row today after falling ill. This comes in the heels of Italy reeling from a worsening coronavirus outbreak which has so infected more than 500 people and caused 17 deaths according to The Sun.

As of this report, the Vatican has declined to report whether or not the Pope will be tested for the virus. It was reported that the Pope celebrated Mass, as usual, this morning and will go ahead with some private meetings even though yesterday he was too unwell to travel to a mass on the other side of Rome and stayed in the Santa Marta guesthouse where he lives in the Vatican.

According to a spokesman he had a “light indisposition”. The recent concerns for his health had been raised the day before after he was reportedly seen coughing and blowing his nose during an Ash Wednesday service in St Peter’s Basilica,  Italy.  Many of the faithful Catholics wore face masks, but others chose not to do so as they kissed the Holy Father and shook his hand.
