The Christian Faith and Politics

Christian faith and politics in Malaysia

Do religion and politics go together? Do we have to separate them? Some say one is godly and should not go with the earthly politics. However, some insist that in order to get things done and the people cared for, one has to rely on some faith for good governance.

In other words, people who are religious, have to be concern about politics. Politics affect the society and community, meaning, the people around us.

Citizen journalist Chan Lilian met Dr. K J John who is a regular contributor to Malaysiakini. She talked to him about religion and politics. A few weeks later, at another function, it is church meets government. All the leaders from the churches in Penang met the Chief Minister and his officials in a lunch forum.

Conclusion is, the church do need to rely a bit on the government for help. At the same time, the politicians do need the church goers support as it is made of up potential voters.

Why Christian should involved in Politics

Jesus Christ refused to participate in the politics of His day, even though Israel was occupied by a cruel and unjust oppressor. When confronted by the Romans, He clearly stated that His kingdom was NOT OF THIS WORLD. (John 18:36)

The first Christian church did not seek to change their culture by creating laws reflecting their ethics, they preached to all mankind the forgiveness and freedom in Jesus Christ. And the gospel prospered all over the Mediterranean, in spite of hard persecution.

  1. Most Christians who go into politics have good moral intentions at first but do not come clean after a period of time when in power. The present PKR leadership is not proven becoz they are not in total power, yet. Wait until then we shall see. We must always remember absolute power corrupts absolutely, no one is exempted! This we have seen in the church and the nation politics.

  2. My belief is as a Christian we are duty bound to stand for truth, righteousness and justice be it in politics, government or workplace. Our call is to execute the will of God in all situation. We are ambassadors for Christ, representatives of His kingdom not the present kingdom. We stand for biblical truth not political ideas no matter who or what they represent. If what they do is not in accordance to God's principle we must oppose them at all cost.

  3. There are many reformers, who tries to change the society - John Calvin, Martin luther, etc. These great men influence politics though they are not deeply involved. It is the duty of a true believer to try to influence the society and eradicate social evils.

  5. Politician wants support only they don't want your religion! Don't be used by them! We can support the good means for the people but not their political ideology.

  6. Be the Joseph and Daniel if you can BUT know your calling! Unless you know for sure that is what God wants you to be otherwise you'll definately be in trouble and not be able to withstand the pressure in politics. To stand for truth, justice and righteousness are easier to say than done. You need the power and presence of God to be with you like Joseph and Daniel to sustain you from compromising the will of God. May the wisdom of God be upon you for those who feels they want to be involved in politics.

    1. Best response I have read from this site. I totally agree that God himself would have to call a Christian believer to enter politics or he/she consumed by compromises without the presence of the Holy Spirit's indwelling.
